Do you ever stop and think about where your flowers are grown?  If you've ever bought or received flowers there's a good chance they have travelled thousands of kilometres, picked weeks before they arrives in your vase.

According to the Federal Department of Agriculture, during February 2017, 9 million rose stems were imported from overseas, with the majority sourced from Kenya.  The increase of flower imports to Australia is putting pressure on local growers (source: The Flower Association).

As you know Petal Post only ever offer Australian grown flowers, because we’re passionate about supporting our local farmers and wholeheartedly believe the quality of our seasonal flowers can't be beaten.

Many of our flower box selections feature roses from Grandiflora; a family owned cut flower rose grower in Victoria.  Recently I visited the farm to meet with Darren Baldrey, who gave me a personal tour of the facilities.  I was blown away by the sheer size of the operation site, with 11 green houses and state of the art equipment used to count, sort and bundle the roses.  It is easy to see why Grandiflora is leading the country, if not the world in premium quality roses.

Grandiflora recently celebrated 60 years in business…

Back in 1954, John & Kryntje Schreuders migrated to Australia from the Netherlands and were the first to import the American Sim Carnations. And so Grandiflora was born.  Six years later they began to grow roses and have been leaders in industry innovation ever since with ground breaking production technology, rose transportation and commercial flower cool rooms.

Grandiflora boast over 120 varieties of roses…

In 1994, Grandiflora ventured out with its own cut rose breeding program & they now print an annual Collection Guide showcasing the entire range of roses which includes Classic, Clustar, Premium, & Spray rose. One of the most impressive things is the purpose built, vase life test room which was constructed in 2011, to test all new Grandiflora varieties which they are coming up with all the time.

Keeping it local, reducing carbon footprint…

By providing the Australian industry with a large quantity of premium roses all year round it allows florists the choice of local over imported product.   Another impressive fact is that Grandiflora recycles 100% of the water from the entire production.

For me personally, Grandiflora provides reliable, premium roses - their vase life is excellent and their selection abundant.  This Valentines Day we featured three Grandiflora varieties - the scented Bold & Beautiful, Peach Avalanche & Salmonie all chosen for their beauty & meaning: deep pink for admiration, blush pink for appreciation, peach for gratitude.  Sign up for our Fresh Flower Subscription to receive regular deliveries and you'll certainly rue delighted with Grandiflora Roses...
